Evaluation of Anti-inflammatory Activity of Seeds of Linum usitatissimum in 3 Different Animal Model
Inflammation is body’s attempt at self protection characterized by five cardinal signs; it may be acute or chronic. NSAID(non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the commonly used to reduce the inflammation.
Though there are various approaches to reduce the ill effects of inflammation and its secondary complications, herbal formulations are preferred due to lesser side effects and low cost.
This study was aimed to find out the anti-inflammatory effect of Linum usitatissimum (Alsi). For the evaluation of anti-inflammatory effect of alsi 3 different animal models i.e carragenan induced rat paw edema, histamine induced rat paw edema and formalin induced rat paw edema models were used.
The chemical mediators such as Histamine, 5 HT, Bradykinin and PGS are involved in the genesis of acute inflammation. Anti inflammatory drugs produce its effect by selective or non selective inhibition of the inflammatory activity of these chemical mediators. The results of the present investigation suggest that the ethanolic extract of Linum usitatissimum exert anti inflammatory activity possibly by inhibition of inflammatory activity of 5 HT and Histamine.
Linum usitatissimum exerts many pharmacological activitites such as anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti oxidant, cardioprotective, antisecretory, anti ulcer. It is also used in constipation and as a wound healing agent. Flax seeds are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and linoliec acid. Hence the anti-inflammatory activity of Linum usitatissimum is may be due to omega-3 fatty acid.
